I heard part of an NPR piece about this. Apparently they were going to use the term "pluton" for the smaller spherical objects but the geologists complained that they already used the term for something else, and the Italians complained that "Pluton" is "Pluto" in Italian. I still like "pluton" better than "dwarf planet."
